Kane Valley Ski Conditions – February 2017

Been skiing in the past day or so? Leave us a comment about which route you used, what the trail was like, and anything that needs attention. You can also leave (or respond to) questions on the Kane Valley Trails or about local weather.

We’ll also use these posts to tell you what’s been groomed, what is scheduled to be groomed, and anything else club members and trail users should know about. Our trails are not suitable for skate-skiing.

SNOWSHOERS – PLEASE READ: We are still getting snowshoers trashing our groomed trails (that means any smoothed or tracked trail). Please do NOT walk or snowshoe on the trails that our ski club members pay to groom. There are flagged snowshoeing trails that you can use starting from most parking lots.

Coming up – February 24th: XploreSport Snow Camp for Kids run by Pacific Sport Merritt. For more details click here: Snow Camp 2017

Travelled all the way from Kelowna to try out your trails Feb 19. Thought they were groomed for skate skiing. Pull a chariot up Vale, and got really frustrated due to narrow trail. We didn’t last long. The scenery looks nice but I wish I had known before going all that way it was not skate friendly.

We skied Ravens, Vale, Menzies loop today. Good fast skiing with a touch of fresh snow on the harder pack. These trails all groomed and tracked. Some of the side trails packed with the snowmobile. Darren the groomer was out most of the day today so more trails should be groomed. Around -2 to 0C most of the day, the snow getting a bit soft in the afternoon sun. Good skiing.

We did have freezing rain overnight in Kane Valley – where we live in the west part of the valley 20 km from the ski trails there is a crunchy layer on the deep snow pack. There is some fine snow falling (at 10 AM) so that might make the trails usable.
Check the highway conditions before heading to Kane Valley – we heard that the Connector was closed out of Merritt. Likely to be icy conditions on the roads everywhere.

Has the Kane Valley been hit with freezing rain in the last few days? Any update on conditions would be appreciated!

what a beautiful day in the Kane Valley. Temps around minus 10 degrees, surprisingly less new snow up there than in town, so not too tough of a slog on the skis. About 6 cm (3inches) fresh snow, so not over the boots, or even over the ski tips for that matter. I made a loop from P3 up Kane, Gulch, Overeasy, then back along Kane, so some tracks to get you going on. There is a car rally in progress today (not sure for how long), so I encountered quite a bit of traffic on the way out, and the Kane Valley Rd has a few skid marks on the corners, creating a bit of ice hazard. I have to say this is one of the best snow years that I’ve seen in my 30 years of skiing at Kane, and very grateful for the lack of constant thaw/freeze cycles that have plagued us in recent years.

was out for a quick snowshoe this morning, temp quickly rising from minus 19 to minus 15 under a beautiful sun-filled sky. Ski trails (Kane) look to be in very good condition, although a bit ‘firm’. Not icy, but my guess is they would be fast. Definitely looks like great conditions still.
