Kane Valley Skiing – January 2020

Chili Sunday is on January 12th – starting at 11 until approximately 2 pm,  at parking lot P2. Beginner lessons at 1 pm. Bring some chili to add to the communal pot – the club is providing buns, drinks and cookies. We’ll have a fire to warm yourself by and share some camaraderie with your fellow skiers. Chili Sunday is a free community event, so fees no are collected that day (only!) We do need people to join the club, so memberships will be available that day too.

Some important changes at the Kane Valley trails:

  • Skiers with dogs are now allowed on two trails – the usual Matthews Loop (and the Chute access) and now also on Aspen between P5 and P6 (Please don’t take dogs on to any of the adjacent trails)
  • There are now signs for the snowshoe trails – PLEASE DO NOT SNOWSHOE ON THE GROOMED SKI TRAILS.
  • We have a new membership drop-off location: Breathe Bikes at 1960 Quilchena Avenue. Owner Travis Fehr is our new membership coordinator. Merritt and area residents can now drop off membership forms with payments and pick up membership tags. Tags will still be mailed to out-of-town members.

Been skiing in the past day or so? Leave us a comment about which route you used, what the trail was like, and anything that needs attention. You can also leave (or respond to) questions on the Kane Valley Trails or about local weather.

We’ll also use these posts to tell you what’s been groomed, what is scheduled to be groomed, and anything else club members and trail users should know about. Our trails are not suitable for skate-skiing.

Grooming update: P1 Ravens, Gulch, Asp, down to Vale and P3 all groomed today with small groomer. More Grooming to follow later in the week and more snow expected!

  2. Rob Rose says:

skied p3 Vale, Manzies chute, Mathew’s. Groomer was out. Vale and Menzies were very nicely groomed. Chute and Mathew’s had apr 2” of fresh snow on the groomed trail. -4 at 11am made for spring like skiing. A worm temp. Gliding wax is recommended. The hill at church down to p1 has several deep tracks on it. I would recommend no skiing down it till it can be groomed.

    Was out Sunday, January 26th

Skiied Kane to skyhigh. Then Matthews Loop.
Snow was very sticky, more of a walk then a glide! But I always enjoy the sunshine and fresh air regardless!

Had a fire and lunch afterwards with friends. Thanks Kane Valley!

  4. Kate Anderson says:

Groomers went out January 24th and were able to groom Matthews loops, Kane and Aspen. The rest will have to wait until it cools down overnight as the warm temperatures makes the grooming challenging. Skiing early in the day is a good idea!

  5. Rob Rose says:

Skied from p2 Kane sky high to Tolko then back to p2. Wish I had more time. About 3” of snow on the groomed trail. Tracks were well packed in that made for easy skiing.

  6. Herta Klassen says:

Skied Matthew’s Loop this afternoon. It wasn’t groomed but the snow conditions were excellent. Had a great ski in the sunshine!

  7. E&L says:

Thanks, Nicola Nordics, for another great ski today. We started at P2, crossed the road to P3 and zigzagged all over the north-side trails before skiing out to P1, around Matthews Loop and back to the P2 shelter for chili. The snow was light and fluffy over beautifully groomed tracks. And we really enjoyed chatting with so many of you around the fire. The drive back to the coast was interesting, but still well worth it for such wonderful skiing.

To the dog fearful lady yesterday. I apologize for scaring you with my dog. She is a pup and lots of things are new to her. By freezing and not moving or speaking you looked threatening to her. If you had spoken to her or called out a greeting all would have been well. Again sorry for not handling it better.

Jan 11 2020. Skied Hills Homestead this afternoon. The snow really is soft and slow. It will be great for new skiers tomorrow. To the lady with the two hunting dogs on the dog friendly portion. I think you missed a real moment with your dog today. You could have got control and walked her past me as I stood like a tree. That would have given her confidence over her fears and it would have reduced my fear that you could not get control. Now I am not sure I want to meet your dog again and she is still afraid of sunglasses.

  10. Kate Anderson says:

All trails were groomed yesterday (except Harmon and Tolko Loop) Conditions are fantastic!

Chili Sunday tomorrow, come and celebrate with us! 11-2 at P2

We could use some help with beginner lessons at 1pm.

    Happy Trials…

  11. Rob Rose says:

Beautiful morning ski. P3 to p1 Matheus east, Kane to p3. Apr 3” of new snow over a well groomed trail. Couldn’t ask for better ski conditions. I got back to the p3 around 1pm the snow was just starting to get sticky in the open areas.

  12. Kate Anderson says:

Fees NOT collected on Chili Sunday (only!) January 12th!

    Hope to see you there!

  13. Kate Anderson says:

Groomers went out today! While the warm temps have settled some snow, there is still a good base. The road has been well sanded, lots of folks out enjoying Kane Valley and all it has to offer!
Please note, more snow is expected all week and Chili Sunday is a week away! Please come, briing your friends and come celebrate playing outside! Bring enough Chili for yourself and your party, we add it all to the communal pot and it’s the best Chili I’ve ever had! It’s from 11-2 with beginner lessons at 1pm.

Chili Sunday is a free community event, so fees collected that day (only!) We do need people to join the club, memberships will be available that day too.

Happy healthy active New Years! If you have any questions please email the link on this site!

Skied Menzies, Gulch and Ravens ridge today. The changes in temperature have made the trails quite rough to ski.
